It's simply your own content, protected from automatic deletion by the Zune software. It has to do with the device settings; allowing the software to sync your files, or choosing to sync them manually by yourself. I think -- although I might be wrong about this -- the software may not delete the old "protected" files if you then change your sync settings back and forth from "auto" and "manual.
Of course, once you find yourself in this mess, the only way as of this writing to remove the files from your Zune is to go into Settings and "Erase All Content. In any case, it's not very elegant. The Zune community is hoping the next firmware update will help clarify the situation, and give users some measure of control over what to do with this "unclassified" content.
This is not, by the way, a slam against the Zune product. I think they're great gadgets, and in addition to the Zune Pass I've allowed myself to indulge in, we use it as a video and music player for our son. I like Audacity, of course because it's free, but also because it is very simple to use. A row of big, iconic buttons on the top control the action, and the audio is represented visually by one of them spiky-graph things.
This allows you to perform edits on your file easily, such as removing dead air, splicing together different segments, or even cleaning up the sound. It even supports multiple audio tracks, if you want to get that involved. I most recently used the program to record the theme song from one of my son's favorite TV shows. It was a simple matter of clicking the "record" button in Audacity, switching over to my media program, pressing "play," and waiting for the song to finish.
