Registration can be automatic or manual — see 6. Here you have a private forum. Only registered users can view and post. Here it would be very unusual to allow automatic registration, and this will be typically a manual process. Under the forum attributes on the right hand side, set visibility to private. If you do not permit anonymous posting, then your users will need to register with your site.
It is up to you to decide which method is preferable. Automatic registration is easier and it does allow people to quickly sign up, but by the same token gives you less control over who is contributing to your forums, and can lead to spam postings. Manual signup involves you in more administration, but does give you complete control over who has write access. Save the page.
To get you going quickly, maybe just set the page to have you preamble followed by an email link such as. There are lots of contact form plugins, which you can use later to get a registration form going on this screen. By all means set this up now, but a placeholder email will get you enough to see how it works.
Enter their details as required. So we now have a forum or two on a page which is accessible from the menu. You can do this by adding these into a sidebar, or if you are using a full-width page, but adding them to a menu. But first you need to see if you need to change what page template bbPress is using for your site.
So you may want bbpress to display differently than the template it chooses for instance you might want your forum on a full width page and find that it uses a sidebar template, or visa versa. If you have some knowledge of editing files then follow this guide to help create a bbpress.
By default bbPress will use a page template in your theme root folder. Luckily, WordPress makes it easy to add a forum to your website.
As you might have guessed, the solution comes in the form of a plugin called bbPress. Chances are you will immediately see it on your screen as the Add New screen shows the most popular plugins first. This is where the fun begins. The first step after the plugin has been activated is to create the main page where your visitors will be able to access the forums.
The first method involves creating a parent forum called Forums or whatever name you prefer, and then adding it to your main navigation menu. Give your forum a name and enter a short description in the text editor. Set the status to Closed to ensure nobody can post a new topic to your main forum.
In the text editor below, insert the following shortcode:. We actually need to create some forums. You could create a separate forum for each specific genre and then you could create child forums for specific time periods or subgenres. So your forum structure might look something like:. Alternatively, you can choose Category as a Type in the Forum Attributes section for your parent forums and group the child forums under that category. Your forum has several attributes which are worth getting familiar with.
The status of any forum you create can be open and closed. The open status means any registered user can post a new topic. You can also set different visibility: public means even unregistered users can view the forum. Private will allow only registered and logged in users to view the forum and hidden will allow the forums to be viewed only by administrators and keymasters.
I deleted the plugin and all was well again. I did determine that if you decide to use Simple:Press on 5. Finally I moved it to my dedicated box and it worked fine. My advice to you is backup your WP database if you try it on an existing site, and make sure your MySQL server version is 4. Once you enable this option you can display most recent forum activity from either your sidebar, home page, or any other post or page in your blog:.
There are many, many other options — such as graphics, style, icons, and more that you can use to customize Simple:Press look and feel to be more like your site design. This is only the beginning of dramatically changing the methods of interactivity and community in this web site.
